How to Catch Your First Spring Salmon & Tips Every Angler Should Know.

Few moments in fishing compare to the take of a spring salmon, often called a “springer.” These early-running Atlantic salmon enter rivers straight from the sea — bright, powerful and often difficult to tempt. With the right approach and fly choice, however, your chances improve.

When and Where to Fish

Spring salmon usually arrive in rivers from late winter into early summer, depending on the system. In colder water they tend to hold in deeper pools, steady glides and areas with good cover. Because these fish are fresh from the sea and water temperatures are still low, presentation is just as important as the fly you choose.

A slow swing across the current is often the most reliable method. Fish the fly down in the water column, keep a steady line, and stay alert — takes can range from a gentle pull to a sudden, powerful grab.

Five Reliable Flies for Spring Salmon

Ally’s Shrimp
A well-known modern pattern. The pink and orange colours show up well in slightly coloured water and it has accounted for many salmon across UK rivers.

Willie Gunn
One of the most recognised salmon flies. Its bold black, yellow and orange & gold combination works in many water conditions.

Cascade
A bright fly that comes into its own when the river has some colour after rain. The strong orange and yellow tones help fish spot it. A touch of green can be a killer on some rivers.

Black and Yellow
A simple traditional pattern that continues to produce fish, particularly in clearer water. Tied in a Monkey pattern.

Sunray Shadow
A long, slim fly that can be very effective when fish are on the move. Fished higher in the water or with a bit of movement, it can provoke reaction takes.

For Sunrays i like Pink Fluro Heads & Green Fluro heads on black and clear tubing using Glo Brite Thread. Like they often fish on the Laerdal.

Spring salmon fishing can be challenging, but that’s part of the appeal. When the line finally tightens and a fresh fish turns in the current, it makes the wait through the winter worthwhile.
