The History of 8-Wale Partridge Cord

At Set Clothing, we’ve always believed that fabric tells a story. That’s why we chose 8-wale partridge corduroy for our new S Polo Caps a material rooted in heritage, built for durability, and perfectly suited to modern cord headwear.

A Brief History of Corduroy

Corduroy dates back to 18th-century England, where it became known as a durable, hard-wearing fabric for labourers, gamekeepers, and country workers. The name is believed to derive from the French “corde du roi” — meaning “cloth of the king” — though its true legacy lies in practical British workwear and countryside clothing.

Its distinctive ridged texture, known as “wales,” gives corduroy both structure and character. An 8-wale cord sits right in the sweet spot: not too chunky, not too fine. It’s rugged enough to hold shape, but soft enough to wear daily.

Why 8-Wale Cord Works So Well for Caps

When it comes to cord caps or corduroy headwear, fabric choice matters.

  • Structure: 8-wale cord has enough body to maintain a clean cap silhouette.

  • Durability: Originally designed for hard wear, it handles everyday use with ease.

  • Texture: The ribbed surface catches light subtly, giving depth without shine.

  • Seasonal Versatility: Ideal for cooler months, but breathable enough for year-round wear.

The “partridge” tone inspired by traditional British countryside colours adds a warm, earthy depth that pairs effortlessly with workwear, denim, and outdoor layers.

Colour & Partridge Cord

Colour matters just as much as fabric. For our S Polo Caps, we chose Partridge  a tone rooted in British countryside heritage.

Inspired by the natural plumage of the partridge bird, the colour sits somewhere between warm brown and muted olive. It’s earthy without being flat, rich without being loud. In different light, it reveals subtle depth and tone much like the landscape it was inspired by.

Partridge has long been used in traditional country-wear and field garments, valued for its understated, natural character. It pairs effortlessly with denim, workwear, knitwear, and outdoor layers — making it a versatile choice for everyday wear.

Combined with the texture of 8-wale corduroy, the colour gains even more dimension. The ridged surface catches light softly, adding depth and character without shine.

It’s a considered choice — classic, grounded, and built to last.
